General Question Many Clients & Customer Have Asked
This list is by no means exhaustive but it does attempt to answer a lot of the questions people typically ask or wonder about. Of course if you have other questions or more specific concerns, please don’t hesitate to call or send an email.
We understand finding the perfect therapist can be daunting, but we're here to make that process as easy as possible. We provide a free phone consultation to assess your needs and goals to see if More Than Hope Counseling is the right fit for you. You can call or text 252-947-HOPE (4673)
More Than Hope Counseling does not accept insurance. This is for a few reasons. One reason we do not accept insurance is for your benefit and to legally maintain the integrity of biblical and pastoral counseling. Insurance companies require diagnostic codes that become part of your permanent health records. Our approach to counseling and coaching allows me to support you in protecting your privacy so you are free to get the support you need without the limitations of the healthcare system.
The other reason we do not accept insurance is tied to licensure and we have intentionally not pursued state licensing, believing the Wisdom of God relayed to us through His Word is the basis for good counsel, not an optional source that must be requested by a client before it can be brought up in a clinical setting.
No. We are not Licensed Counselors, Psychiatrists or Psychologists, nor do we hold ourselves out to be. We are a Church-based counseling center. While not licensed, a Masters of Divinity degree, theological training, as well as additional training and certification with the AACC (American Association of Christian Counselors) has prepared and equipped us to provide the help you need. Whenever warranted or necessary, we will refer individuals to local licensed Professionals.
The first session will be more conversational and focused on getting to know you and your situation and gain understanding. That first session allows us to set up a plan and establish some goals. The first session will also be longer - usually 90 mins
In every session expect a few. things:
- A caring, listening counselor
- Scripture as the foundation and source of hope, comfort and healing
- Homework (this is not talk therapy - faith AND works are inseparable)
- Prayer
- Accountability
We offer in person and virtual sessions. The initial intake appointment is in person whenever possible
The sort answer is yes, as long as there are are still available appointment times. Please call for more information if this is something you're interested in or require.
More Than Hope Counseling is absolutely confidential. We operate as an agent of the church (pastors/ministers), not as agents of the state (licensed counselors). If your counseling subject requires professional representation in a court setting by a counselor, then More Than Hope Counseling will not be the best fit for you.
Confidentiality is very important and as such we employ a number of layers to protect it (including HIPPA compliant phone numbers and secure messaging)
In the case of marriage or family counseling, there is limited confidentiality, meaning the confidentiality belongs to the relationship and not to the individual.
More detailed information is found in the confidentiality agreement form.
The short answer: it depends. Our approach to counseling is meant to be a short term model of growth and change rather than an ongoing 'talk therapy' approach.
Of course, counseling timelines vary widely depending on identified issues, relationship history, communication styles, emotional expression, commitment levels and any presence of trauma. You will be guided throughout the process and expectations will be clear.
